New York based architect Taleen Josefsson, Principal of TAJ Architecture Studio, and regular contributor to Work in Mind, will host the Change by Design seminar series for 2023. These events aim to prepare today’s designers to meet the challenge of designing with a positive impact for the following: for human health, equity, and the environment.

Explaining the need for these events, Micène R. Fontaine, Chief Futurist Officer, Design Arts Seminars, Inc. says:

Cities won’t change overnight, but they are ripe for reinvention. Step one is to zoom out and understand the ecosystems at play. Then we must find ways to embed our built environment into the natural world. Tough questions are bound to come up: Can we afford to build for resilience and stay put? If not here, then where? Are we mitigating symptoms or getting to the root cause of the issues? What’s the goal: Future readiness or future fitness?.”

“There is no question that the twin Biodiversity and Climate Crises are upon us, but it is yet to be determined how architects and designers will respond. An increasing number of clients are calling for buildings with a focus on sustainability, whether meeting business ESG (Environmental Social Governance) goals or from a sense of personal responsibility.”

The 2023 Change by Design seminar series aims to prepare today’s designers to meet the challenge of designing with a positive impact for the following: for human health, equity, and the environment.

Seminars will include: Designing Well Daylight Spaces, Healthy Buildings & Occupants (Ventilation), Specifying Healthy Materials, Socially Responsible Material Sourcing, and Translating Sustainability Concepts into Buildings, amongst other important topics.

“Not a week goes by without a reminder that we, as an industry, need to tackle these tough questions, which is why we at Design Arts Seminars have decided to dedicate our 2023 Change by Design series to Designing for the Climate & Biodiversity Crises,” says Taleen in her statement announcing the events.

Across 12 monthly seminars, each session will tackle a different topic with actionable steps you can take in your architecture or interior design practice.

As in past years, the Design Arts Seminars, Inc. will provide recordings of all 2023 sessions as they become available.

Over the year, not only will U.S.-registered Architects and Interior Designers earn 12 HSW Continuing Education credits, but more importantly, you’ll continue to develop your path toward a more sustainable practice. Regardless of your motivations – our 2023 Change by Design series will help support your efforts.

Taleen and team look forward to seeing you online Thursday, January 26, at 1pm Eastern time to kick off the 2023 series.
