NewsBuilding safety: UK Government plans cladding remediation enforcement unit

The UK government has announced the creation of a new Cladding Remediation Enforcement Unit, designed to accelerate the removal of unsafe cladding from high-risk buildings. The unit will sit within the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) and will be tasked with ensuring that building owners comply with remediation requirements.

Building Safety Minister Alex Norris confirmed the initiative in response to a Parliamentary question from Liberal Democrat MP Will Forster. He stated that the unit would hold owners of buildings with ACM cladding to account and enforce necessary remediation measures.

The move comes as part of the government’s wider building safety reforms following the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, with additional compliance measures under review ahead of the Spring Spending Review in June. Various task groups are currently being established within the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) to explore further improvements to building control.

While the creation of the enforcement unit has been welcomed, campaigners continue to call for swift action to ensure residents living in unsafe buildings are protected as soon as possible.
