Historic Walworth Town Hall relaunches as dynamic flexible workspace and cultural hub for local creatives and community groups

Walworth Town Hall in South London has reopened after more than a decade, following extensive restoration work led by creative real estate developer General Projects in collaboration with Southwark Council. The Grade II-listed building, which suffered severe fire damage in 2013, has been removed from Historic England’s “Heritage at Risk” register and now serves as a hub for local businesses and community groups.

As part of the regeneration, healthy design principles have been incorporated throughout the building, with a focus on sustainable materials, thoughtful lighting, and adaptable workspaces.

Timber restores functionality and warmth

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) has been used extensively in the restoration, replacing fire-damaged sections and introducing modern structural features. In the former council chamber, a new vaulted ceiling constructed from CLT provides a contemporary reinterpretation of the original design.

Timber is also a key feature of the ground floor café and lobby, where arched timber columns and a timber ceiling contribute to a lighter, more open environment. These spaces aim to create a welcoming atmosphere for workers and visitors alike.

Lighting for productivity

Lighting has been designed to enhance productivity and comfort throughout the building. A recessed barrisol lighting system in the council chamber recreates the effect of a skylight, helping to create a bright and uplifting environment. This approach supports a well-lit workspace, promoting focus and reducing the strain associated with poorly lit environments.

Spaces designed for flexible use

The redeveloped town hall now accommodates over 550 workers across a mix of offices and coworking desks. The design prioritises flexibility and functionality, providing adaptable spaces to suit a range of needs. Communal areas, such as the central lobby and café, aim to foster collaboration and social connection.

Original materials, including oak flooring, have been retained where possible, complementing new features like herringbone parquet. Exposed walls above the dado-line maintain a sense of the building’s heritage while giving the interiors a contemporary edge.

Balancing heritage and modern needs

Walworth Town Hall now serves as a resource for the local community, with a ground floor community centre offering flexible spaces for events and activities. The café, operated by Jusu Brothers, promotes healthy eating and provides an additional space for public use.

Throughout the project, General Projects worked closely with Southwark Council, Historic England, and local groups to balance the preservation of the building’s historical character with the need to create modern, functional spaces.

The restoration demonstrates how heritage buildings can be repurposed to meet contemporary needs while incorporating elements that prioritise wellbeing and sustainability.
